Brita: The Market Leader With a Certification Gap Most Buyers Don't Know About
Brita is the most recognized water filter brand in America — and that recognition is both its greatest asset and its biggest problem. The brand's dominance in retail means millions of households own a Brita product and assume they're filtering their water. Whether they actually are depends entirely on which filter they're using.
The Brita Standard filter removes chlorine taste and odor. Its WQA listing has no lead reduction claim. The Brita Elite filter — which costs slightly more and fits most current Brita pitchers — is listed under NSF/ANSI 53 for lead reduction. WQA also certifies pitchers used with it to NSF/ANSI 401. The difference between these two filters is the difference between taste improvement and health protection. Brita's packaging doesn't make this distinction easy to find.

- Renters needing accessible NSF 53 lead protection (Elite filter)
- Households with easy access to retail stores for filter replacements
- Budget-constrained households: $42 pitcher + $12 Elite filter, at $0.10/gallon over the 120-gallon filter life
✗ Look elsewhere if:
- PFAS is a concern. No PFOA/PFOS claim is listed for the Elite or Standard filter.
- Nitrates, fluoride, arsenic, or dissolved solid reduction needed
- High-volume household — 40-gallon Standard filter life is impractical
- Verified lead service line in building — upgrade to an under-sink filter listed for lead, such as the Aquasana AQ-5300+, or RO
