RO Membrane Performance Test: Do It Before Replacing

Before spending $28-40 on an RO membrane replacement, test whether you actually need one. Measure TDS before the system (your tap) and after the RO stage. TDS rejection should be 90%+ for a healthy membrane: if tap TDS is 300 ppm, post-RO should be below 30 ppm. If rejection has dropped to 70-80% (300 ppm tap → 90+ ppm post-RO), the membrane is near end of life. If rejection is still 90%+ and water tastes correct: replace pre-filters first — a clogged pre-filter can reduce membrane performance without the membrane itself being degraded.
